Overheard in Philly
I have been getting a little homesick for the sounds of Philadelphia. Maybe I just haven't got an ear for the patois here. Last night, at the sublimely silly Ocean Beach Christmas parade , I found the announcer's pronunciation of "dog" so it rhymes with "log" amusing. Of course, Californians think "dawg" is funny. I wonder when it will sound natural and/or I will lose my accent?

Uh... what is it that "dog" is supposed to rhyme with?
To Californians, it appears to be log, or bog... to my Philadelphian ears, it's dawg, or Aug. In fact, otherwise the cartoon character Augie Doggie's name doesn't rhyme, greatly lessening the comic effect, I think.
